Nominations invited for £40,000 Artes Mundi Prize

29 November, 2006

Following the success of the exhibition and Prize in 2004 and 2006, Artes Mundi is now seeking nominations to shortlist for Artes Mundi 3 in 2008. At £40,000 the Prize is one of the largest to be awarded internationally to an individual artist.

Artistic Director Tessa Jackson says “In 2006 we received nominations from 60 countries around the globe and, for 2008, we will be developing the strong momentum that the Prize now has”.

Artists cannot nominate themselves so those knowledgeable in the contemporary visual arts are invited to put names forward. Nominated artists can be of any age, living or working anywhere in the world but should meet the following criteria:

• they should be artists who have achieved recognition for the quality of their work in their own country or sphere and are emerging internationally, and

• they should be artists who, in their work, discuss the human form or the human condition and add to our understanding of humanity

In 2006 the Artes Mundi Prize culminated in a major exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff and showed the work of Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Thomas Demand, Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg, Leandro Erlich, Subodh Gupta, Sue Williams and Wu Chi-Tsung. The panel of judges was chaired by Gerardo Mosquera and the Prize was awarded to Eija-Liisa Ahtila.

To nominate an artist for the Artes Mundi Prize in 2008 a standard nomination form should be completed. This can be downloaded with further information from www.artesmundi.org or is available from Artes Mundi
