Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson was last night awarded the Derek Williams Trust Purchase Award at the Artes Mundi 6 Prize awarding dinner.

The £30,000 Award enables an artwork by one of the Artes Mundi 6 shortlisted artists to be acquired for Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales contemporary art collection.

Jonathan Watkins, Director of IKON gallery, who formed part of the judging panel for the purchase award, announced the decision saying, “We thought about what the world needs now, and what the world needs is the work of Ragnar Kjartansson.”

Kjartansson said upon accepting his award, “Getting this award means a lot to me. Being one of the shortlisted artists is one of the greatest honours I have had. To be in that clan of inspiring glowing artists. Winning the award is somewhat of a ridiculously great bonus. I am very thankful that a piece of mine will now be in Cardiff´s National Museum permanent collection. It is a great museum and I have some hopes of creating a site specific piece for it.”
