Artes Mundi wins Action on Hearing Loss Excellence Wales Award
Artes Mundi was announced on Friday 17th May as the winner of Action on Hearing Loss Cymru‘s Excellence Wales Award in the category Arts and Entertainment for our BSL-led tour of Artes Mundi 8 in January 2019.
The Excellence Wales Awards are an opportunity to celebrate organisations across Wales (in the public, private and third sector) that make their workplace accessible to people who are deaf or have hearing loss. This includes making services truly accessible to all customers and/or ensuring that opportunities in the workplace are open to all.
Artes Mundi was recognised for programming Wales’ first BSL-led tour of a contemporary art exhibition, curated and led by sector expert and Deaf arts practitioner John Wilson, who runs BSL tours at institutions such as British Museum and Tate Britain. The tour was programmed in collaboration with Cardiff-based artist and deaf activist Jonny Cotsen. We hope to share our findings from this project to help the visual arts sector in Wales programme more accessible events for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
In an interview with Get The Chance, Jonny Cotsen said: “I have been campaigning for many years to try and get John Wilson, Deaf arts practitioner and consultant to curate and lead a BSL tour at one of our brilliant museums/galleries. John is one of the most experienced Deaf curators in the UK and for him to come to Wales to led the Artes Mundi exhibition at the National Museum, Cardiff was fantastic!”
