Chen Chieh-jen

Date posted: October 31, 2009 Back to the exhibition

Chen Chieh-jen works with photography, film, installation and performance to explore issues connected to globalisation, in particular labour, consumerism and migration.

He makes work as an act of resistance… ‘as an act of connection, linking together the history of people who have been excluded from the dominant discourse, the real-life situations of areas that are being ignored, and ‘others’ who are being isolated.’ Born in 1960 and based in Taiwan he is also interested in his country’s particular position, seen by many as an independent country, but by China as one of its states.

His solo shows have included Military Court and Prison (2008) at the Museo Nacional Centro de Artes Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain, Condensation: Five Video Works at the Asia Society, New York, USA and Chen Chieh-jen (2001) at Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France. In 2009 his film Factory (2003) was shown by Iniva at Rivington Place, London alongside the work of Artes Mundi 3 winner, NS Harsha. Chen Chieh-jen Retrospective 1996-2010 will open in 2010 at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan.
